I believe you can buy an attachment for a socket set called a crows foot.  I
used one for a particularly difficult nut on an auto engine.Beats the work of

I changed the  shift cable on my 33-1  1976  with the atomic
four.  It went fairly well but I do recall taking a 1/2” open end wrench
and heating it to put a 90 degree bend in it.  Still have that in the
bottom of my tool box

Woes

Took
the day off to tinker on the boat. The transmission linkage had stopped working
for forward. Reverse works fine on the venerable Atomic-4. For forward I have
to
hop below, remove the companionway steps, and push the shift lever into
forward.
This got old, even with crew.
When shifting to forward from the pedestal the shift cable bulges downward
where it exits the sheath(?). This is a span of about 4 inches of cable and 5
inches of solid rod which connects to the shift lever.
Very tight quarters. Seems like I'd have to remove the engine to replace
the shift cable. Major bummer.
I twisted the end of the cable 180 degrees and reattached it to the shift
lever and that might have fixed it. I can now get it into the forward detent
from the pedestal, but time will tell...
