I was having problems with my cooling system (raw water). After running the
Yanmar for a while and then stopping, when I turned it back on, the high
pitched whistle and red light would come on and stay on for longer than I
thought proper. Water was coming out the exhaust, but it was still worrisome.
After checking water flow through the system, I still found nothing apparently
wrong.

Then I wiggled the water inlet hose just above the thru-hull and discovered
some small cracks. Hose was still apparently intact, but on further inspection,
there were tiny cracks which went through the hose. I replaced the hose and
have had no further problems. Same kind of hose you are talking about (1980?)
but there was just a little air getting into the system - enough to cause the
signals.

So, it will be hose patrol for me over the winter (more of the same stuff on
some drains) - just winterized yesterday and will haul today or tomorrow.

  Alan,

Don't stop with checking just the fuel hoses. My 1986 Landfall 39 had very
badly "weakened" deck drain hoses. Looking at them, I would never have guessed
how weak they were.

I bought the boat about 2 months ago, and just had it surveyed after doing a
fair amount of work in preparation for the survey. The surveyor picked up on
the hoses, and he was absolutely correct!

While they looked fine, when they were flexed they showed surface cracks.
When I tried to remove them, they ripped apart. It appears that the wire
reinforcement had corroded internally, and the hoses rubber had simply
deteriorated.

These were the "Shields" brand black hoses with the green printed labeling on
them. Doing a further search, we found the same type (although different
diameter) Shields black hoses used on the head seawater intakes and the galley
sink drain. All exhibited similar decay.
