Bought our 1990 boat in 2002. Replaced all hoses on the engine cooling, bilge pumps and head over the first winter, every hose except the engine exhaust. Better than a good insurance policy and 10% the cost. Definitely do the head in winter; cut it out and throw away.

My 1986 Landfall 39 had very badly "weakened" deck drain hoses. Looking at them, I would never have guessed how weak they were. I bought the boat about 2 months ago, and just had it surveyed after doing a fair amount of work in preparation for the survey. The surveyor picked up on the hoses, and he was absolutely correct! While they looked fine, when they were flexed they showed surface cracks. When I tried to remove them, they ripped apart. It appears that the wire reinforcement had corroded internally, and the hoses rubber had simply deteriorated. These were the "Shields" brand black hoses with the green printed labeling on them. Doing a further search, we found the same type (although different diameter) Shields black hoses used on the head seawater intakes and the galley sink drain. All exhibited similar decay.
