For what you are doing I would just rent one (or one of each) from BoatUS, then you don't have to worry about obsolescence.
Or you could get a DeLorme inReach, with that one you can leave a bread crumb trail, and you have two way communication- it would be nice to have confirmation that someone was actually hearing you.
