The original rudder on Quicksilver  my former 38 mk1 was a solid 2 1/4" OD
stainless bar. About 8 years ago I had it remade by South Shore. It was the 1st
one they had done but they said they had  the prints and molds. They made the
rudder and charged me $2200.00. When I got the rudder ( shipped frei ght, very
heavy) and put it in the boa t the post was short and the key way was not
correct. So check all of these things out before you order or get the old
rudder to the builder.

The shaft on the original rudder for my 38 mk1 was 2" schedule 80 stainless
tube (2 1/4 OD and wall thickness about 1/4", IIRC) It had a machined
stainless plug welded into the top for the upper nut and the emergency
tiller attachment.

The replacement rudder is built on the shaft from a similar vintage 38 LF.
It was 2 1/4 OD solid stainless bar stock with the treads and tiller
attachment machined in the top.

For those who did a post mortem on their stainless steel shafts, were they
hollow or solid?
