That would make the boat a stiffer in a couple of respects.,,

All kidding aside:

All of the popular hardwood choices for boat stuff seem to come from the 
tropical rainforest. 

White oak should be good, but no one seems to use it.
I wonder why. 
It was the material of choice on the larger vessels of days gone by.

I bought a piece of curaco deck board to make some new hand rails.
Have not done it yet.
