Bob, The batteries do last a very long time, especially considering they are charged and discharged daily. That's a lot of cycles and it's cycles that kill batteries!!!

However, the vent will operate/spin during the day, without the battery, as the motor will spin under solar power alone. I did not know there was a battery in this unit...I think it is the Nicro 2000, an older model. I thought it was normal for it to not operate when the sun went down.....will now look for a battery for it.
