Bob,
Look for at least a 2250 mah battery. If you can find a 2500 mah battery,
better.
If it works during the day it's probably OK. However, I'd check the output
before buyng a battery. To do that, place the unit in direct strong sunlight
and test the voltage across the contacts of the battery comparment. Should
have better than 1.2 volts. The batteries are 1.2 volts so you need better
than that to charge them.
My unit was only putting out 1.02 volts which indicates one or more of the
solar cells is dead.
