Bob are you sure Tom Dabny didn't teach you also. Thought it would be hard to
explain rather than to show someone, but that is it the thumb points to the
pole jaw once the pole is on the "new" side of the forestay. And when you
originally grab the lazy guy thumb is pointing to the trimmer end of the line.
Also don't let go of the line once you grab it correctly while you are turning
around in front of the forestay. Takes a bit to get used to because it will
seem wrong when you first grab the guy.Btw Is Dabny Sails still in business in
Mobile Al any of you gulf coasters know?Jim

We will await Jim's response on this.

In the meantime, here is what I do.....take the lazy guy in which
ever hand holding the back end or the trimmer's end with my thumb
facing back on the guy......go crouch in front of the forestay,
wait until the pole dips under the forestay and begins to come
back up on the other side, drop the lazy guy in the jaw and trip
it closed pressing the guy down with your thumb. As long as you
hold the line the same way with your thumb pointing back and don't
try to drop the guy into the jaw before it crosses below the
forestay, you should never have an unwelcomed wrap in the jaw.

“There is also a little trick of how
              you hold the
lazy guy so it never gets put in the jaws backwards and
              wraps the jaw.
I was shown this method many years ago

going to share this trick with
                    us, Jim.
