>> Is an end for end gybe easier/faster/safer than a dip pole on a 35? <<
In my past years of performing foredeck duties on race boats from 24' to 70' the end for end vs. dip pole gybe question has been often discussed while performing ballast duties on the weather rail. In light and settled conditions the end for end gybe is often a better choice with less chance for disrupting the spinnaker. I have done a variation of end for end on very large boats just for that reason. When the dogs are being blown off the chains and the sea has her knickers in a twist, boats with larger fore-triangles can be a handful to end for end gybe. Even with the pole well supported by the bridles, dancing about with the pole loose gets entertaining very fast. On a 35' C&C (typically with a larger fore-triangle than many newer designs) the end for end would work well with an experienced crew both forward and in the cockpit. If short-handed or sailing with newbies keeping one end of the pole firmly connected to the mast may be the safer choice. The experience of the helmsman can make or break a gybe. On Calypso the speed of rotation under the sail is a point often discussed between adventure land and fantasy land inhabitants. Sailing World magazine's web site has archives with decent articles on the topic of spinnaker handling and gybing. A while back there was one that really helped several of Calypso's helmsmen visualize what I was trying to communicate (from under a cloud of nylon in very salty language).
