I do have some insight on this system as it was the one on my '77
38MKIIC when I purchased it in 1977. I also worried about the fact
that it was the forestay. When I had it inspected......I found that
the foil itself had cracks near the top that were large enough to
expect a fracture in the near future. This is an old system and I
would respect the advice about saving for a replacement. Both
Harken and Selden have suitable replacements.......I chose The Selden
unit because the wire forestay was included in the price. Harken
charges separately for that.
I've had the Selden Furlex system on for about 12 years and it has
required only minor maintenance. If you insist on trying to service
your Stearns unit......you can try Rig-Rite in rhode Island. They
used to stock parts and did rebuild my swivel unit before I abandoned
the whole system.
