Up here in the far north I use Amercoat ABC 4 antifouling paint, it is much
less expensive the Micron CSC and I apply only one very thin coat before
launch every spring (I thin it with varsol). Takes about 2 liters of paint
on my 35 MKII, so a can does me 2 years. I have used a roller and long
handle in past years but I think next year I will try a wide thick stain
brush like I used to apply the Cetol to my house. In the fall at haul out
the hull is free of barnacles but seems covered by a slippery green slime
layer. Some folks get the yard to try to wash that layer off with a
pressure washer but I don't bother with spending for that. I have found
that the slime dries during winter storage and leaves a slight greenish
brown colour on the black anti fouling paint but it does not affect long
term adherence of the thin layer of ABC4 that I apply before launch. I know
I am building up a paint thickness every year but not much and it does not
seem sensible to me for the way I use the boat to remove perfectly good anti
fouling paint by sanding or high pressure washing every year, especially
considering the associated work, personal and environmental hazards and the
cost. This has worked well for me for many years and I plan to continue
doing it that way. I don't expect to have to do a complete bottom paint
removal during my lifetime and I will add that even with this somewhat
relaxed approach Alianna is still very slippery through the water and if I
raced and did poorly I don't think I could attribute that poor performance
to the bottom paint job.

If I to remove bottom paint to gel coat again, I'd hire a contractor.

I was between job opportunities when I did my bottom. I had to remove
Pettit ablative and Baltoplate, a hard racing paint. I tried stripper to no
avail. They need the ambient to be above 75 degrees and I did this during
winter storage. I used an orbital sander attached to a very powerful wet
vac, and wore a tyvek suit and face mask. In spite of my precautions, some
paint reattached to the deck of another boat. Oops! I found the final
layer of Baltoplate removed easiest with wet sanding, which I did by hand
wearing a bathing suit and rinsing the paint that ran down my arms with a
hose. Wish I had an air powered sander that I could keep wet with a fine
spray.

I use VC Offshore, a hard paint. I haul the boat late in season, and
wetsand the hull while the boatyard power washes the other side. All of
the paint drips through their drain/filter system and meets DEP regulations.

Bob,

I chose soda blasting this spring and never regretted it. The surface that
was left was almost spotless and ready to paint (after a couple of wipe
downs). The price wasn't that bad. It certainly beats a week of hard labor
with sandpaper and scrapers.

Facing the nasty task of stripping the bottom paint off the C&C 29 mark 2
that I bought this spring.
It has 1 to 2 mm of blue ablative antifouling buildup that looks like the
face of the moon (lots of craters) I was thinking of trying one of the
chemical paint strippers.

Practical Sailor rated the following strippers in order of their preference
> Franmar - Soy Strip (Best Choice)
> Back to Nature - Ready Strip (Budget buy) Back to Nature - Aqua Strip
> (Recoomended) Petite - Bio Blast (Recommended)

Has anyone tried these products?
Any comments / words of wisdom?
How do these products compare to soda / lime / wet sand blasting?

Once stripped, I am planning to do Interprotect Barrier Epoxy Coat and
VC17M.
Planning strip this fall, let it dry over the winter and do the epoxy in the
spring
