Jonathan, Sorry, my PC has been down for a bit, so this may be late.
I prefer to take out almost all of the slack. I don't put any real tension on them. Too much tension will increase the amount of effort needed to turn the wheel. It may also increase the wear on the rudder bearings. Just my 2 cents worth.
