ASP people are great. I visited there store after the boatshow and got boatshow
discount.

I followed Sampson's directions based on the line diameter of 1/4" and the tuck
worked out to 22 or 24 inches. Then I lockstiched 4 or five stitches at the
throat of the eye (about 3 to 4 inches) so it doesn't loosen under a no-load
condition. The lockstitch doesn't carry any load, it just prevent the line from
slipping under no-load. You can always make the line shorter, but you can't
make it longer unless there is extra bury. My first lockstitch used a grey
heavy thread. I changed methods and prefer using a contrasting color so I can
check that it stays healthy or cut it and redo the line.

APS has the most extensive rope inventory I have ever seen. Luckily, they are
10 minutes from The Office.

Chuck, no need to do eye splices? How long a tail did you lockstitch?

I replaced our wire lifelines with 1/4" Amsteel. All of my 8 turnbuckles were
reused by changing the screw/swage fitting with a screw eye, and I simply
spliced luggage tag ends with lockstitch. I use the turnbuckles to tune the
lines tight and many people think they are steel when tight. In future, I'll
eliminate 8 turnbuckles and tension the line using the screw eye of the pelican
hook at the gate. It saved a little bit of money, a little bit of weight, but
the driving reason to go synthetic was to do it all myself. Didn't need to send
out to have wire swaged.

Bought screw eyes from apsltd.com Some of mine are left hand thread, and had to
be welded in SS. Call them for options.

Sorry about the partial message!

Now that we all know each others preferences for gloves and footwear, I thought
I would start a new discussion.

My boat has the original 29 year old vinyl coated lifelines and a couple of
bent turnbuckles. I know the turnbuckles require immediate attention. Should I:

a. pretend there can be no corrosion
b. try to strip off the vinyl
c just replace them?

If "c" use wire or Dyneema?

Thanks.
