I replaced Calypso's last year with new wire and turnbuckles. For our limited
racing we needed un-coated wire (there is some allowance for line but I did not
follow that course).
29 year old vinyl coated lifelines likely have significant hidden corrosion. I
was surprised how far back (from the end of the vinyl) corrosion was evident on
Calypso's old life lines. I cut back the vinyl out of curiosity. The boat has
been in salt water the last 10 years. From old pieces that came with the boat
I suspect the life line were changed 2 or 3 times between 1971 and 2011.

Sorry about the partial message!

Now that we all know each others preferences for gloves and footwear, I thought
I would start a new discussion.

My boat has the original 29 year old vinyl coated lifelines and a couple of
bent turnbuckles. I know the turnbuckles require immediate attention. Should
I:

a. pretend there can be no corrosion
b. try to strip off the vinyl
c just replace them?

If "c" use wire or Dyneema?

Thanks.
