The checkstays on the 34/36 serv a couple of purposes.

In heavy air and chop they can stop the flexible mast from pumping. If you
use the babystay they can help counter that force.

In light air, they put shape back into the main. If you put on back stay
tension (particularly with the 3 spreader rig) to point higher you will put
bend in the mast that will flatten the main. The check stays will pull the
center of the mast back to add more shape to the main.
