Ron, It should be possible that you have a "Y" fitting that attaches to one exit. You could even have a "Y" on the intake hose. The two pumps are essentially plumbed in parallel. Either one will work. The flapper valve in the pump will prevent the pump that is not in use from sucking air. It will also keep you from pumping the outlet water the wrong way through the pump.
I find this arrangement very unusual. I prefer to have two separate systems. That way, if a clog develops in the intake or outlet, I have a complete, independent backup system. I have the manual pump at the helm, but not the pump in the galley. I test it once a year. It appears to be original and still works great. Do both pumps actually pull on one suction hose from the bilge? Why doesn't air suck in from the other pump when not in use? Does anyone else have this arrangement and can you give me a simple description of how the plumbing goes for these two pumps. There is a "y" fitting along side the motor???which seems to run to the thru- hull fitting. Sorry if this sounds confusing, but I"m confused now as well.
