Most of the local ISPs that I have used filter inbound and outbound port 25
on their "residential" services, which makes running a mail server locally
problematic without the use of a smart host.

Most of the "business" packages do not have this restriction. Having said
that, a VPS is a whole lot cheaper, I have a couple of http://buyvm.net/
VMs which have been excellent value.

For those that worry about having their data reside in the US, I would
recommend https://mykolab.com/, which is a hosted kolab solution based out
of Switzerland (Canada provides no protection beyond what you would get in
the US anyway).

Kolab and Citadel are my two favourite messaging/collaboration suites.
