Try playing something natively in Linux and then comparing that same file
in VB.  Modern audio hardware may be more complicated than a single output
control.  Have a look at the CLI mixer alsamixer, and make sure that
relevant outputs have their volume levels set appropriately.

Audio is far more complicated than most people realize.  Have a look at the
Windows 7 or 8 mixer once you open up a few apps and you will see that this
is not a Linux problem.

Having said all that, I am not certain that user is capable of reporting
this accurately.  This is just not something our brains are good at.  The
only way to be sure is to do some A/B testing with a meter.
