For sound don't forget to check the Linux mixer for sound volume.

For printing it would not surprise me that network printing is a lot slower
than direct usb, especially on lower end hardware.

Not really a virtual box thing.  Virtual box is the worst performing
hypervisor out there, though it does tend to get the nod for ease of use.
