Tails boots just fine from USB on my Lenovo T430. You might have to disable secureboot. Additionally you might have to enable "Legacy Boot" by going to Startup -> UEFI/Legacy Boot and change it from "UEFI Only" to "Both".
By works fine I mean that it boots, connects to the internet, and seems to be using TOR. I am disappointed that certain utilities for looking at the network (no mtr and traceroute fails even with sudo) are lacking. It is not enough to just trust them, we must also have the tools to verify. I am also troubled by the lack of ntp utilities (the time is always way off since I have my system clock set to UTC). The 4 GB RAM limit (I did not see a 64 bit option) also sucks IMO.
