Ubuntu is great because it has the awesomeness of apt (I am particularly fond of aptitude) while taking a more pragmatic approach to hardware support (proprietary firmware blobs etc.).
In a perfect world I would choose Debian. For this imperfect world we have Ubuntu. If you want to waste a weekend just getting something simple configured like your wifi or dual/triple/quad monitors, then Debian is just the ticket. If you expect some of those things to just work, then Ubuntu is probably your best bet. I say this with love, I just do not have the time nor inclination to wrestle with Debian on the desktop any more. Ubuntu-LTS is my go-to distro these days. Fedora might be OK, I just hate the package manager (yum was an improvement...). If you suspect that a package was not installed, you can get the whole kubuntu experience by installing the virtual package "kubuntu-desktop".
