Ubuntu is great because it has the awesomeness of apt (I am particularly
fond of aptitude) while taking a more pragmatic approach to hardware
support (proprietary firmware blobs etc.).

In a perfect world I would choose Debian. For this imperfect world we have
Ubuntu.

If you want to waste a weekend just getting something simple configured
like your wifi or dual/triple/quad monitors, then Debian is just the
ticket. If you expect some of those things to just work, then Ubuntu is
probably your best bet. I say this with love, I just do not have the time
nor inclination to wrestle with Debian on the desktop any more. Ubuntu-LTS
is my go-to distro these days.

Fedora might be OK, I just hate the package manager (yum was an
improvement...).

If you suspect that a package was not installed, you can get the whole
kubuntu experience by installing the virtual package "kubuntu-desktop".
