In your Gnome settings - Region and Language "layouts" tab, make sure English 
(US) is set as the layout for all windows.  I can't remember the exact wording 
or how to find it as I haven't used Gnome in a while.   Hope that helps.  A few 
years ago Ubuntu had a bug where installation settings were not applied to 
layouts.  I assume it has been fixed by now.  I also don't have an answer for 
why Ubuntu is so great.
