I had quite a few problems with my Sansa, and never tried M3U
playlists (or playlists at all, for that matter.)

The main issues I had were:
- Filenames starting with a space character (auto-generated filenames
from downloading shoutcast streams.) The player would say there's a
file there, but it wouldn't be able to play it.
- Even though I verified ID3v1 tags were there for files, they would
still show up as unnammed :-(

I still use my Sansa, but I don't even bother trying to get anything
working that's more advanced than just playing files... and even then
it's not very good. The fast-forward sucks... 15 seconds every 2
seconds??? that's terrible when you're trying to fast-forward to the
middle of a 2 hour file. It's worse with video... it's a pain to
watch an hour long talk (from Defcon, for example,) in multiple
sittings, because it always starts playback from the beginning, and it
takes forever to fast forward again, arg!

Anyway... to get back on topic... make sure you are using the most
basic form of M3Us, filenames, and ID3s, and go from there.

If possible, try getting it working on a Windows system, and just copy
what Windows did. I also had to upgrade the firmware before the ID3
tags worked for me (under Linux.)
