I have indeed done this.  You can change the bios to boot from the SD
card instead of the onboard SSD or do this manually when you boot (I
can't remember the key to press, F-2 maybe?).  I did the install via a
USB DVD drive and simply chose the SD as the primary device.


The Ubuntu mid is aimed at the new generation of UMPCs with the Intel
Atom CPU and will be optimized for this platform (the older eeePCs do
not have this architecture).  You can still add the apt source to a
standard K/X/Ed/Ubuntu by adding the following to your /etc/apt/sources.list

# Ubuntu netbook remix -- Launchpad, obviously unstable in nature
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-team/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-team/ubuntu hardy main

The UI is probably what you are interested in.  The package name is
ume-launcher and it is stable enough to be usable now.
