This just happened to me :) I upgraded MySQL from 3.x to 4.x must have been 
forever ago...must have not restarted the daemon at that point either :s

Anyway, on reboot MySQL didn't come back. Turns out I had to run a script to 
update the user tables...and I'm off to the races.
