Could be. I'm still figuring out how to do things the functional way.
The reason I have these nested maps is to give my data structure. I
don't want to have a loose collection of things. It is easier to
understand the hierarchical structure. Otoh you have to change the
whole path up to the top of the hierarchy.

That's right. I think I want to have a ref there anyway for another
reason.
