Studied, saw the backports possibility but when I checked, my sources.list
had already been modified for that.

So I downloaded the 97.8 tarball and tried to get it to run with
prefix=$HOME, building it as gene. Most of the make check passed, but when
installed, I would have had to change the perms to me of all the log and
database files. Didn't, from a security viewpoint, seem like the thing to
do. More likely resembled that famous Margolin target pistol. :(

So I copied the tarball to usr/src & unpacked it again, but first had
synaptic nuke completely, all the installed 97.7 stuff, including configs.

cd into 97.8 src tree and issue a "./configure --prefix=/usr"
Bombed out, total showstopper, very quickly:

"checking for clamav in /etc/passwd... no
configure: error: User clamav (and/or group clamav) doesn't exist. Please
read the documentation !"

Says see the documentation without specifying which of the several manpage
makings are in the doc directory.

Except for some lengthy .pdf's no docs have been built, and the old
manpages, probably wrong by now, have all been excised.

So what would be the usual procedure to re-establish the user/group entries
short of re-installing the now broken packages and then just letting the
"make install" step overwrite the now broken but installed bits & pieces?

This doesn't seem like a very good way to run a train to me. But obviously
I'm not privy to all the secrets either.

Whats next?

>From the looks of my /etc/sources.list, this had already been done, perhaps
a year or so ago, whenever 97.5 something was obsoleted. In any event, all
thats available in backports is 97.7.

So it would appear that this upgrade has killed it for everybody running
Lucid. And if I can't upgrade just yet, I and about 5k linuxcnc users are
screwed.
