I've double checked that it is clamav-0.97.5.tar.gz with the new VRT signature

clamav-0.97.5 directory and check it was compiling correctly. I've been using
clamav since 2004 so I've been doing the same thing for awhile several systems
including this RHEL 5.1 that I have been running since 2008 and updated by Red
Hat weekly. Again I used the same clamav-0.97.5.tar.gz file for my MacBookPro
and other older Linux systems no problem. This first time I ever seen this on
RHEL 5.1.

Check your library directory to see how many instances of the clamav libraries
are installed, and look too for multiple copies of clamd (using locate, perhaps,
or find). It appears your new and old versions my coexist in part or whole.
Building from source to replace a previous RPM-installed version requires some
fiddling with configure parameters.
