But it survived a full regression test here (Linux/amd64).
Will go through the code again tomorrow and see if I can make it deadlock.

I have applied that patch to 0.97.1 code, it compiled cleanly, and I am
running it now on two servers. I also sent the patch to someone running
Debian i386 who says he has a similar problem.
his seems to hang 3 or 4 times a day, so, maybe he can test the
patch/and/or get us a core.
