I agree with you, this script is obviously no match for daemontools & C.  

safe_clamd is mainly targeted for people who have not the 
knowledge/motivation to install/configure daemontools and at the same
time want an easy way to restart clamd in case it crashes.

Let me rephrase my initial request: if you are not already running clamd 
under some kind of monitoring tool, you should try safe_clamd.

Debian and RPM packages of asterisk and mysql run the respective daemons
under a monitoring script out of the box. 
We hope that in future this will be the case for clamd too.
