I think the confusion arose because the pre-announcement said "We are about 
to release...". Now, if that had been qualified by a date, then perhaps 
we'd all have waited. In the absence of a date, people have assumed that 
"about to" means approximately now.

Given that the purpose of the pre-announcement is supposedly to allow us to 
schedule time to do testing, it would be really really useful to know when! 
But, perhaps that information isn't available, and perhaps there's 
therefore no point in making the pre-announcement.
