Since your 'make install' doesn't succeed, I suspect it never comes to
copying a clamd.conf into /usr/local/etc.

Well, I don't think that would be a good advice. My advice would be to
upgrade your OS, but that'll be more work (you cannot upgrade to 6.2
stable directly, you would have to go through 5.3 first).
I don't think the version from your ports collection is still supported
here ;-)
