MySQL distributes pre-compiled binaries, too (because of irky glibc issues
on some platforms); and with great success, I might add.

What does ClamAV really need, in terms of libraries? Not that much, it
seems. On my FreeBSD system, all it really needs is:

/usr/local/lib/libclamav.so.1

There is other stuff, like:

/usr/local/lib/libgmp.so.6

And curl libraries, and such. But, as far as I can tell, really only
libclamav.so.1 would have to be updated on a new engine.

Is this route advisable? Maybe not; but doable? I think so.
