Who is whining? I was just following this discussion, from a distance, and
merely mentioned that precompiled binaries, though uncommon on UNIX
system, are done by MySQL, for instance.

Also, in the course of investigating, it never hurts to figure out what
libraries a program really needs.

It has only been running for 1 day; so I will let you know, in a while,
whether I really have something to be grateful for. :)

Not to compile stuff, if that's what you think. I get paid to keep systems
running. If in the course of my duties I need to compile, I need to do
that too, of course. But the primary goal is to keep things going, and
stable. And secure, while I'm at it. :)

It may surprise you, but in a professional environment, having to
recompile/reinstall Anti-Virus engines, on a regular basis, makes some
people at the top floor nervous. Because it means a possible disruption of
mail. Not if everything goes well, of course; but especially for those
occassions where new engines introduce equally new regression errors, for
instances; or simply new bugs.

Updating databases, ok, everybody understands that. Plus, if you have a
good database upgrade script, you will backup old data first, so you can
restore in case the newly downloaded database got corrupted somehow. But
recompiling the entire engine, if having to be done too frequently,
honestly, that makes the brass nervous.

So, I am currently evaluating ClamAV. And if it turns out I have to
recompile every week, then I can tell you that I will probably look
elsewhere. Per irony, you could say I get paid NOT to compile. :) That is,
I am expected to come up with viable, and stable solutions.

Cheers,

- Mark
