Sounds like the database checks might be causing you issues. What's your "SelfCheck" setting in clamav.conf? I'll be it's 600 seconds. Does it lock up every 20 minutes if you change it to 1200 seconds? If so, then figure out what about the file locking is causing the problems and your system will run well after that. Blue skies...
