Jesse, I was having similarly strange stability problems with a CVS snapshot from 20040324. I turned it off for a while and monitored CVS commits. Sometime over the weekend, a bug was found in libclamav and was fixed. I've been running a cvs snapshot from 20040331 (Wednesday) and it's working great so far. You might try getting a recent CVS snapshot. Caveat: I looked through the CVS for today and there are a few things that are added since yesterday that seem experimental to me. I'm not saying it will or will not work, but I would grab CVS from March 31, try it out, and then if you feel like testing, grab CVS (HEAD) from today. Blue skies...
