This is how I configure almost all of the packages I compile for scratch.  
Yes, I'm a Linux user but I also believe it's just a decent sysadm method.  
You've got to be organized and using /etc wisely is how I accomplish that 
in part.  At least Clam lets you easily redefine where the config files 
live.  Too many packages don't which is extremely annoying.
