Thanks for the suggestions, I'd used a similar approach to get it all working, but was more concerned as to why the original approach failed. I use this with many other packages without problem, and wondered wether there was actually a problem/error somewhere within the Makefiles that ought to be resolved.

There is no problem with the ./configure on the build machine. The build runs fine on the i686 machine, the problem is trying to do a 'make install' on the i586 machine :-
You can do this manually - do "make install" on i686 and then copy installed files to i586 (you will find them in /usr/local/bin, /usr/local/sbin, /usr/local/sbin
Oh, my last suggestion wasn't very smart, just do: ./configure --prefix=/tmp/clamav --sysconfdir=/etc --with-dbdir=/usr/share/clamav and everything (except for clamav.conf and databases) will be installed in /tmp/clamav.
