I looked at Amavis-ng last night and maybe it was just me, but it sure seemed like it was not even close to ready for prime time. I had to do a lot of manual work, some of which wasn't covered in the docs (such as they were). And in the end the amavis daemon said it was starting up but would then mysteriously go away without any reasons being put into the log files.
I did the same work last night and i have notice the same behavior of amavis-ng (0.1.6.2). To fix this i have run amavis under control of "strace" and found a bunch of missing perl modules. In fact a have to install these perl packages additionally:
Archive-Tar Archive-Zip Compress-Zlib Config-IniFiles Convert-TNEF File-MMagic IO-stringy MIME-tools MailTools
And do not forget to comment out the compress tool binaries - in the standard conf file there where all not active (as i see in the first patch, further releases change the default to "active"). Also i suggest using the mail/info logging over syslog and increasing the debuglevel to 6.
