I choose the codec depending on the application (DVD, AVCHD, post production etc...).
In fact when it comes to have files that you can use easily (DVD player for say) the choice does reduce itself to a mere couple of options (y4mstream, ac3) that you need to multiplex later on.
For HD DVD not too sure. For Bluray : AVCHD with a H264 encoding.
For post prod : quicktime in 444 HD uncompressed or Tiff files in sequence.

Someone else with better/more  ideas ?
Cheers

If you were really getting a 10-gigabyte file that would be surprising,
but I think it's more plausible that you're confused about what a gigabyte
is than that you're actually getting that - since you also said "20 times
larger!!" and that'd only be 10 megabytes, which is reasonable.

Correct. I meant to type "mB" not "gB"!!

Forget about what exactly? Rendering to .avi?

Not at all ... AVI is a container not a codec. The codec is yuv2 or 2yuv
on your big files, forget about it if you are using a camcorder. There
is no point, a mpjeg in an AVI file would be more appropriate, or I
believe so.

While abstractly I understand the difference between codecs and
containers/formats, everyone always talks as if its easy for end users
like me to choose the underlying codec of their container formats. If
there were some way for me to flip a switch on UYVY versus YUYV
ordering, or mjpeg versus yuv2, then I would *love* to know about it.
Right now I know of no way to control that in cinelerra or any other
software.
