After the reboot, things have been much improved. Just to experiment, I had a 
single clip in the bin, and I had sliced a couple of bits of it  ffrom the 
viewer out to the timeline. These were playing perfectly, and all seemed 
well. I then tried to switch the sound driver from OSS to Alsa - it didn't 
like that it seems - a moment later Cinelerra locked up and refused to take 
any commands. I tried killing artsd as you suggest, but that had no effect at 
this point. I had to killall cinelerra
