I think meson is too young, and have no experience with it.
Autotools has been around forever and is a known quantity, even if M4
makes my eyes bleed. Once you get it working, I've found it to be quite
reliable.
Of course that "once you get it working" will be a lot of work. :)
I also thought about cmake, which I have some experience with and like.
But X11/Motif used autotools so there is something to be gained by
hopefully not having to re-invent at least some wheels in this process.
