That's interesting. At least once there was an issue because the X server only allows "local" connections with e.g. DISPLAY=:0 but not what seems equivalent, e.g. DISPLAY=localhost:0. So maybe something similar is happening here [shot in the dark - and i don't really know why this problem wouldn't manifest _always_].
