I have 3 AUIs: two 10BaseT and one 10Base2 (don't have any 10Base2 stuff anymore though). I tested with both the 10BaseT units and it so happens they both had SQE turned off. So after flipping the tiny switch to on, they both work and no more message. I used them with some old Sun Sparc IPC machines in the past and clearly they didn't care. So I must have turned them both off back then. I'm glad it was that simple.
