At the point when those "obsolescent" businesses have lawyers that can put you in prison and/or take away everything you've ever worked for in the past and will work for in the future. Getting charged/sued is not exactly conducive to preservation either. You're either a threat to their business or not, and unless you have the financial and political connections to defend yourself in court it's in your best interest to know your place.
