Like many others, I am still trying to come to terms with the fact that Bill is no longer with us.
I had the good fortune to first meet Bill when we both worked at the (old) LMB. As a Ph.D. student in Kiyoshi Nagai’s group with a project that soon turned to be RNA-only, it was impossible not be fascinated by this instantly likable American postdoc who understood the chemistry of RNA like very few others. Out of sheer generosity, Bill soon turned in my second, unofficial supervisor and taught me a significant part of the crystallography I know — including guiding my very first attempt at refining some coordinates. My fondest memories, however, are of the many late nights we spent in our neighboring labs, cursing evil RNAs that did not collaborate, sharing endless laughs and blasting R.E.M. (and Rage Against the Machine!) so loud that there was never any need for a vortex. Bill’s spectacular work on hammerhead ribozyme will no doubt remain his scientific legacy, but there was so much more to him as a person that any of this can convey. The world has not only lost a top-notch mind, but also a truly remarkable human being. And along those lines, I was also asked to kindly remind everyone that Bill would appreciate donations for Gaza’s children through MECA (https://www.mecaforpeace.org/). Learn why this is important<https://aka.ms/LearnAboutSenderIdentification> I’ve been asked to pass along the sad news that Bill Scott recently passed away after a brief illness. I’m sure many members of this community will remember his contributions to crystallography in general and RNA structure in particular. His last wish was no flowers, but donations in his memory to MECA ( Middle East Children's Alliance) for the children of Gaza. ________________________________ To unsubscribe from the CCP4BB list, click the following link: https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/WA-JISC.exe?SUBED1=CCP4BB&A=1 När du skickar e-post till Karolinska Institutet (KI) innebär detta att KI kommer att behandla dina personuppgifter.
