I had visions of spending more hard earned money to get the rack completed.
I guess using a WS-G5483T module in a Cat 3550-24 could do the trick. If there 
is no real requirement then maybe not worth investing.

To add on to Marco's comments. I found that often the Gig interface between 
CAT1 and CAT2 was to be disabled in many of the labs.
