MPBGP is not specifically linked to MPLS, there are others to. You can do CLNS,
vpnv4 (unicast), ipv4 (unicast (the default), multicast, vrf), ipv6 (multicast,
unicast), etc.

Check out RFC2858 for more info

http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2858.txt

The whole MPBGP thingy can get confusing but the VPNv4 routes are really just
IPv4 routes with an RD prepended, this is from Cisco:

"VPNv4 routes are the same as IPv4 routes, but VPNv4 routes have a
route descriptor (RD) prepended that allows replication of prefixes"

Check out the DocCD for more info:

Subject: [OSL | CCIE_RS] vpnv4 address families

Question;

Do you always setup vpnv4 address family when configuring MP-bgp, no matter the
protocol running over it ? and is MP-bgp explicitly linked to MPLS ?
it all seems to mesh with one another, i.e. we almost always seem to use mpls
vpn's in conjunction with mp-bgp.

in the previous labs i was doing it seemed as the vpnv4 'carried' the VRF
information.

Alef
