To directly answer your question. No MP-BGP is not used only for MPLS.
Keep in mind that MP-BGP includes ipv4, ipv6, multicast for each, and
vpnv4. However the address family vpnv4 is used for transporting VRF
routing information between PE routers.

When you run MPLS L3 VPN the following should be configured

1.) IGP setup and functional between service provider routers
2.) ip cef globally on all service provider routers
3.) mpls ip enabled on all interfaces between service provider routers
4.) VRF instances configured on Provider Edge routers
5.) Configure route-target import and export on PE Edge routers under the
VRF instance
6.) MP-BGP peering with the vpnv4 address family between provider edge
routers
7.) Interfaces facing the "clients" should have "ip vrf forwarding"
configured for the approprate VRF
8.) Routing should be configured towards the client.
9.) Finally, necessary redistribution between PE-CE routing protocol and
MP-BGP under the ipv4 vrf VFRX address family

Those are the basics of MPLS L3 VPN that you need
